March 15th between 10:30 AM and noon Emmaline Berg became a Nike High School All American in the shot. To accomplish this feat she had to finish in the top six against the best in the land (including Canada). Emmaline finished 3rd. As far as anyone knows she is the first Track and Field athlete from Holliston to garner such an honor. Emmaline had the best post season of any Holliston track athlete ever winning the TVL championship with her best throw to date and an all time league record 42' 6", a record setting performance at the MSTCA Elite meet, a Division III crown, 2nd place at All States, a New England Championship and 3rd at the Nike Nationals. Coach Vigue, who has coached Emmaline throughout her career is one proud but not surprised mentor.
Mean while also on the 15th Rosie Keogh lined up with the best in the land at just after first light (7:30AM) and posted an 18th place finish in the two mile. Rosie, somewhat disappointed in her time and place was none the less outstanding. A top 20 ranking in the whole darn country. Rosie also had one of the best ever post seasons in Holliston Track history. Winning the TVL 2 mile and placing second in the mile, a 3rd place at the MSCTA Elite meet, a Division III 2 mile championship (1st ever for Holliston at that distance), a 5th place at the All State meet posting only the second sub eleven minute 2 mile in school and league history (was ranked 6th in the time in the nation at that time), and a 7th place finish at the New England meet to go along with the national meet effort. And yes, her career coach is so proud of her that words fail him at this time.
Great job girls!!!

Emmaline Berg: New England Champion
What is 14.75 inches worth? The difference between a New England championship and second place in the women's' shot put. Similar to an old phase "winning by a mile". Emmaline was feeling good on Friday night and for those who know her you could see it in her eyes. Emmaline put together the best series of throws in Holliston H.S. history on her way to winning the women's' shot. At least three of her throws were good enough to win the competition. It was an awesome display and an inspiring performance. The winning throw was 42' 4.25" her second best throw ever.
On the track Holliston's other supergirl, Rosie Keogh, placed an outstanding 7th place in the two mile. Rosie's opinion was it was not a great race. Coach Blackmore's opinion is 7th place in all of New England is not a bad day's work. The 2 mile was a full contact event on Friday night. One girl hit the turf on the 3rd lap. Rosie was almost forced off the track several times in the early going but once the race progressed there was excellent racing.
Coach Vigue and Coach Blackmore are very proud of their star athletes and look forward to a great experience for them at the Nike Scholastic National Championship this weekend. Both girls will compete on Sunday against most of the top kids in the nation. A place where both of them belong.

Emmaline Berg and Rosie Keogh Shine Bright at All States
Emmaline Berg (41' 3.5") brings home an outstanding 2nd place finish at the highly competitive All State Meet and Rosie Keogh runs her best 2 mile ever becoming only the second girl in Holliston H.S. and TVL history to break the 11 minute barrier running 10:59.84.
This was a special night for Massachusetts girls track in general. Never in the history of the MIAA All State meet have 6 girls gone under the 3 minute mark in the 1,000m, there has never been more then 2 girls over 40 feet in the shot, (this year there were 4 girls)and there has never been more then 2 girls under 11 minutes in the 2 mile, (this year there were 5). To say the competition was brutal would be a gross understatement.
In the shot (smallest girls in the competition)Emmaline and the young lady from Newton who won showed that this was an event that size may matter but only if you can marry it to explosiveness, grace and the extraordinary balance required in the circle. This is technique in a highly skilled event. Emmaline goes into the New England meet with the best throw in New England at 42' 6". This throw also has her ranked approximately 19th in the nation which is pretty impressive company.
The 2 mile was dominated by Emily Jones of Bromfield, the number one runner at this distance in the country, but the excitement of the race was the race for 2nd through 5th place. All four girls managed to squeeze across the line within 2.38 seconds of each other. Rosie had the race of her life to this point. During the course of that one race Rosie ran splits that would have won almost all of our dual meets this year in the 1,000m (3:16), mile (5:26) and the 2 mile (10:59.84). It was a truly wonderful display of guts for all of those girls involved. Rosie's time is the 6th fastest 2 mile run in the country this year. However most of the country runs the 3200 meters and when converted she is ranked a still lofty 21st.
Emmaline and Rosie will now move on to the New England Meet on the 6th and both have qualified by a wide margin for the Nationals the following weekend.
In the long walk back to the parking lot Coach Vigue and I could not contain our appreciation for the hard work and effort it takes to accomplish what these two have done this season. Well done Emmaline and Rosie!!!

Division III Championship
Congratulation to all of the athletes who qualified and competed at this meet. For those of you who are not aware, division III is the most competitive division and in many cases the toughest division to qualify in. The athletes who made the standards and competed on Friday night, February 20th were Emmaline Berg (SR), Patrick Delaney(SR), Nicole Chaput(SO), Marissa Bynoe(JR), Kerry Ritucci(SR), Rosie Keogh(SR), Amanda Lang(SO), Evan Reseska(SO), Jill Rosati(FR), Justin Murray(JR), Ben Moody(SO), Karly Slyne(SR), Alli Slyne(SO), Matt Miele(JR), Matt Collari(JR), Dino Roffo(JR), Sam Panepinto(SR). The coaches are very proud of you all.
The girls had an excellent 5th place team finish on the shoulders of three inspiring performances. Taking the first championship of the meet was Emmaline Berg who, for the second year in a row dominated the shot winning with a throw of 39' 11.5". Emmaline won this event by an amazing 4' 5.25". Although off her meet record of over 41' set last year an under the weather Emmaline Berg showed why she is the class act in this state in the shot.
The longer running events were slowed by the greenhouse like temperatures in the Lewis center however, Rosie Keogh adjusted her race and showed why she is one of the top 2 milers in the state winning Hollistons' second championship of the evening with an 11:20.95 effort (4 seconds ahead of second place).
And to finish off the scoring for the girls, Marissa Bynoe powered her way to a 5th place finish in the 55 meter high hurdles. After making it into the finals by a mere 5/1000ths of a second running 9.152 she improved to an outstanding 9.02.
There were also excellent performances by Amanda Lang in the 2 mile, Jill Rosati who missed the freshmen mile record by less then 2 seconds running 5:44.50 (record held by Courtney Richard 5:42.57, 2001), Kerry Ritucci in the hurdles and Nicole Chaput in the long jump. The 4 X 400m relay team of Ritucci, Karly & Allie Slyne and Sam Panepinto put up an excellent time of 4:22.34 for 13th place.
On the boys side we had excellent performances by Justin Murray and Ben Moody in the 1,000m, Evan Reseska in the 2 mile, Matt Collari in the 300m, Patrick Delaney in the shot and the 4 X 400m relay team of Collari, Murray, Matt Miele, and Dino Roffo. All of the boys competitors are back next year with the exception of our league champion Patrick Delaney in the shot.
Moving on to the All State Meet, Friday the 27th are Emmaline Berg in the shot put, Rosie Keogh in the 2 mile and Marissa Bynoe in the hurdles. Good luck girls!!!!

Indoor Track & Field Awards Night
Please mark your calendars for the Indoor Track and Field Awards Night
When: Tuesday, March 10, 7:00PM
Where: Holliston Cafeteria
What is the Awards Night: One of the things the school requires of the coaches is to hold an awards event to recognize the successes of the teams and individual participation and efforts. Anyone who has been around Coach Vigue and Coach Blackmore know that we have highly competitive natures. We love to win. We love our sport. However, we also love to teach not only winning, but other very important lessens that can be learned from participation in sports. Among those being responsibility, commitment, respect, sportsmanship, a sense of purpose, time management and appropriate self esteem. When we gather together to reflect on our season, whether the results are perfect or less than perfect, we hope to point out the highlights, the work ethic, the leadership and the growth we observed throughout the season. We will also celebrate the accomplishments of certain standout individuals, recognize the future potential and give some insight to our sport that may not have been apparent to the none participating family members. We hope to see you at this event. We encourage you to introduce yourself and ask questions. Peter, Sam, Julie and James and our volunteer Ed (an outdoor coach) love to talk about your kids and the program, so do not be shy. Bring your family!! Please read on.
What to bring:
Freshmen: Bottled Water
Sophomores: Soda
Juniors: Cake or Pie (you must provide an ingredients list (school Wellness Requirement)
Seniors: Cookies or Brownies (you must provide an ingredients list)
Note: The format for this awards night has been changed. Apparently there are Board of Health regulations that do not allow us to bring in food cooked at home by parents for consumption by the group. We are compelled to follow these rules to protect the food service license held by the school. Anything less would not be a responsible action by the coaches and organizers of this event. Further, as we explored the options which included various levels of catering (and cost of attendance) and change of venue, we concluded that the price of admission would limit our target audience. Since the coaches have always worked toward a full team participation we hesitate to limit families who may not be able to put up a per head charge to attend on top of the $175 sports participation fee.
Hence we settled on an Awards Night with dessert and drinks. However, if you bake or make something per the above list you must provide an ingredient list attached to your contribution. This is a school wellness requirement. If you purchase the contribution it is provided on the package.
The event is setup and cleaned up by the seniors and their parents (although we encourage everyone to help out). The captains will organize things with the help of either their parents and the HABA liaisons. Senior parents, please get involved to make this a success.

Quietly Excellent
Holliston has been harboring two very well kept secrets in their sporting community. In fact unless you are a cross country or track and field athlete or parent of one you probably would know nothing about either secret. These secrets are Emmaline Berg and Rosie Keogh. They represent two of the best athletes ever to grace the halls of Holliston H.S. What a shame they do not get the recognition of their counter parts on the football field or basketball courts. Not that either of them would be caught dead telling anyone about their accomplishments themselves. But their coaches will, and to anyone willing to take listen.
Both excel in the class room and in their sport. Emmaline will attend Dartmouth College in the fall and Rosie will be off and running at Wesleyan University. Both will compete at this level.
Emmaline has clearly established herself as the best shot putter in the state this year. Her 42' 6" performance at the TVL Meet on January 31st is several feet further than the next best thrower in the state. She followed that performance with a meet record at the MSTCA State Elite Meet the next day with a throw of 41' 9.25" more then 2 feet better than the second place thrower. Emmaline has been embedded in the upper levels of the state throwing ranks since she won the Division III outdoor championship her sophomore year at 37' 4". Emmaline has steadily improved each year including winning the indoor Division III as a Junior with a meet record 41' 2.5", All State win of 41' 8.25", and a 4th place finish at the New England meet. Currently the Dystat rankings (the prominent high school track and field website) will have Emmaline ranked in the top 10 nationally. While this site is never all inclusive it is a good measure.
Rosie is a distance runner competing in one of the nations' hot beds of female distance runners. This has not stopped her from working her way into the top tier of this outstanding group. Rosie began to show signs that she may be something special as a sophomore when she broke the then magic 12 minute barrier at the coaches invitational and then improved on that at the Class III Indoor meet with a personal best 11:53.39 for 7th place. Since then it has been a fast and furious ride. As a junior Rosie established her dominance in the 2 mile in the TVL league breaking the Conference meet record at 11:14.92 and placing second in the mile at 5:26.62 just off the league record. She accomplished this all within 30 minutes. As a junior Rosie placed 2nd at the Class C meet in what is her personal indoor best of 11:13.47 and followed that up with a 4th at All States behind 2 of the top 5 two milers in the nation, and 8th at New Englands. Outdoors Rosie continued to improve running 3rd at Class C in her outdoor best of 11:09.01 At the TVL Conference meet on Jan 31 she repeated as champion in the 2 mile and took second in the mile. Less then 24 hours later she ran a season best at the MSTCA Elite meet for 3rd place at 11:15.33 less then 2 seconds off her best. This was an important run because it is only the second time on the big banked track at the Reggie Lewis Center this year. Her time this weekend also puts her in the top 10 on the Dystat rankings. Unfortunately for Rosie she will face several of those top runners in all of the big meets to come because they are from Massachusetts. In addition to Track Rosie is also the best cross country runner in the league. She completed the fall season with a 4th place finish at the Division III meet and a 4th place showing at the All State meet, this is the best ever showing by a TVL runner. She previously went through the regular season meets unbeaten and won the conference meet with a meet and course record time.
There is a reason why these two young ladies are so outstanding at their sport. Commitment, which includes a enormous work ethic, excellent attitude, strong but balanced priority, focus and courage. Talent is the only wild card but talent alone will not create the success these two have enjoyed. The drive to be outstanding and the commitment to make that happen are the special ingredients that separate Emmaline and Rosie from the field. And with all that said they are still top notch students with widely varied interests which makes them true examples of what is great about being a student athlete.
Good luck to them both during the rest of this season and in the spring.

TVL League Meet Results
The Holliston Boys and Girls finished 5th (30 points) and 4th (40 points) respectively in the team competition at the TVL Conference Meet. A pretty successful competition despite some illness and injury. Highlights from the meet were plentiful on the girls side:
Emmaline Berg won the shot put, (does three years in row make it a habit?) shattering the meet record by a full foot throwing 42' 6". This effort also improved the All - Time conference record and Emmaline's own school record. a truly wonderful performance by an outstanding athlete.
Sophomore Vickie Palamatier took 4th in the shot as well.
Captain Rosie Keogh won the 2 mile in 11:27.87 for the second year in the a row just over the record she set last year while almost lapping the entire field, and winning by almost 30 seconds. Rosie also came back for a second place finish in the mile run in 5:26.69.
Sophomore Amanda Lang placed 6th in the 2 mile with an excellent 12:14.3 time. Amanda also ran the mile in 5:55.05 to complete a very well done double.
